For the organizing of pointless random acts of spontaneity

WordSpy defines the term Flashmobbing as follows:

(FLASH mawb) n. A large group of people who gather in a predetermined location, perform some brief action, and then quickly disperse.

—v., —adj. —flash mobber n. —flash mobbing pp.

So, That is what the dictionary says.

What the dictionary does not say, is that flashmobbing is also about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on!
Who can resist the urge to poke a little fun at society's constraints and conventions from time to time? Why not pull out a banana and have a shoot out with 90 other banana toting bandits, or Row Row Row your boat up the steps of Sydney Opera house? Missed a career in the ballet? Here is your chance to galumph about with 100 other wannabe Prima Ballerinas. Quasi Modo ring a bell? Why not pull on your best hunchback and rant about "The Bells! The Bells!" How about making a very large Air Band in the Classic music section of the ABC shop? Auction Off The Queen Victoria Statue? Yep, we have already sold her. Stock market at the country trains monitors in Central? What else are the monitors there for?!

These are just a few of the events Sydmob has staged over the past few years. The joy in them is how quickly they spring to life, much to the amazement of passers by, then, just as the public is trying to make some sense of what they are observing, Wham!. In a flash, we have all gone again, leaving bewildered and amused expressions behind us. The only thing to identify us are the enormous grins on our faces!

If the thought of taking part in an event as silly as these, with a bunch of total strangers is appealing, then Sydmob is the place for you. This is the place to celebrate our right to organise spontaneous acts of stupidity for the amusement of ourselves and others. Tell your friends, get involved. We will warn you, however. Flashmobbing is extremely addictive. Some of us have been bewildering Sydney since our very first mob, and would not miss a mob for quids.

So who the hell ARE are flashmobbers? Just about anyone with a bit of joie de vie. We are Students and Grandparents, professionals and professional idiots. We range in age from three to sixty three. We come from as far as Bathurst, Katoomba and Newcastle to participate in a three minute event. We are, probably, all very silly people at heart. Our mantra , Congregate. Act. Disperse. The words that bring us joy? Overhearing someone say "What the HELL Was THAT?!?"

Sounds great! Sign me up you say..But hang on...Just what is Sydmob? Sydmob is non profit, non political, non anything but fun. It does not cost a cent to come out and play, all you have to do is sign up, and, nope, we do not give your e mail details to any evil empires, or those who want to sell you cheap medications or offer insulting surgeries, it kinda goes against our principles.

The next event will have to be put back till 14th or 15 October.

We have something's to we have to get through before we can concentrate on the next event - nothing serious, but it has to be done.

So, Spread the word, organise your family and friends and we will see you on the 14th or 15th. The Instructions will be sent out the previous Wednesday, so make sure you friends have signed up by then.

Sunday July 30 2006

Sydmob, We take our hats off to you! Allow us to applaud each and every one of you! What great actors you are! Never have we seen more thoroughly convincingly casual people waiting for a bus.  Not only are you great actors, some of you are terribly good copy writers as well! The "reporter" who was over heard asking of a passenger. "So how was the bus ride?" "How are you enjoying the bus stop so far?" "There are rumours that you have been seen at this bus stop before?

Can you confirm or deny these allegations?" Pure genius! Those are the sort of things that make it an utter delight to host a mob. It was nice to see so many new faces, and to meet some of you post mob. If any of you have photos of today, pretty please send them to either mal@sydmob.com  or tempest@sydmob.com as we would like to put them up on the web.

Next Mob will be on Sunday the 14th or 15th  of October, in the afternoon. Spread the word!

Wednesday 26 July 2006

SYDMOB #35

We are back from battling a bad back, and are ready, once again, to lead you off in merry mayhem!

Please send a head count to tempest@sydmob.com with the number of people attending in the title bar.

On the afternoon of Sunday the 30th of July, you should have already synchronized your watch to the time of the Telstra clock, available by calling 1194. (Please do this, it does help mob timing)

By 12:45 pm you should be in the Circular Quay area. Make your way to Jessie Street Gardens, the grass area at the back of Paragon Hotel on Loftus Street between Alfred & Bridge Rds. (http://www.whereis.com.au:80/whereis/mapping/maplink.do?maplinkId=70135&brandId=1)

*The Mob Rep will be only present between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm*

The mob rep will be carrying a silver folder and wearing a red, yellow and green Rastafarian hat.. They will be in the general vicinity of the Paragon Hotel. Approach this person and say. " I have missed you! Lead me into mad merriment"

You will be then handed the rest of the instructions. Move away, read them, and then follow them.

Guidelines:

- If you are attending a mob with either a partner or a large group of friends, organize to meet at a designated spot after the act has taken place. Preferably this spot should be far enough away so that people who have just witnessed the event don't put 2 and 2 together.

- When the act is over, disperse from the area at the allocated time outlined in the instructions handed to you by the organizer. Choose a direction and leave *alone*. This cannot be stressed enough. Try and not converse with anyone when you are leaving the area, either spectators or fellow mobbers. Hook up afterwards to share the joy! We are trying to give the impression that what just took place didn't actually happen at all.

- If you're attending the mob with digital equipment and wish to take a shot of the disperse, try and locate yourself away a bit from the area. Or have a friend organized to take the wanted shots for you so you don't miss out on the fun. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be generous, and share your images with the organisers! We may wish to use them on the website, with full credit given, of course.

- At completion of some mobs, the participants or witnessing public have suddenly gone into a round of applause at the end of the act. Even if the instructions don't outline this action, there's nothing actually wrong with doing it. Feel free to share your appreciation with fellow mobbers. But try and disperse as planned as well.

- When the disperse happens, leave the area in a calm and sensible manner. When you have a group of people which could reach well over 100 it's never a good idea to initiate a mass stampede, the threat of injury is quite real.

- If there is a presence of authority (police, security etc) and they give out explicit instructions to leave the area, do so. Even if its before the designated disperse time. Having people arrested for taking place in a flashmob is not the kind of attention we are seeking.

- Leave nothing behind but the lasting effect on the minds of your fellow mobbers and the witnessing general public.

As we have quite a few first timers I have copied the general mob guidelines below, please take a minute to read them to help you make the most of your mobbing experience. A BIG tip is to reach the site on, or ahead of time, as we only perform an act of two or three minutes, you will miss it if you dawdle.

Thursday 9th September

I was doing a bit of cruising around the Yahoo sites and it seems the Melbourne Gang may be trying to steer themselves into action. So if you are in or going to Melbourne check out their Yahoo Group site at : http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/melbflashmob/

Friday 3rd September

Well, thanks to Amanda Keller and her Mondo Thingo Team, new Sydmob members are flooding in.
We had well over 30 people join whilst the show was being aired!, and has since well passed the 100+ mark. So a BIG WELCOME to our new mobbers, its nice to see Sydney has a bit fun left in it yet.

We have also had enquires from places such as the Central Coast, Tasmania, Brisbane etc asking if it was running in there area and how to start it up there. Tempest and Myself will point them in the right directions and we all can see if we can help them spread the flash mobbing bug further !

We are planning to have our next event on the weekend of the 11th or 12th of September (dam marathon ..... maybe), and we promise to decide by Monday to give you a chance to plan and gather your family, friends and passers-by in time.
So keep an eye on this page, and look in you inbox on Thursday for your next instruction.....

New Mobbers should take a look at the organise, congregate, act and disperse links on the left for guidelines on what goes on and how to play.

Monday 7rd June

Word up guys. Global flashmob is happening on the 19th of June. This one is putting us to shame. Moscow has been drawing five or six hundred people to each event, and they run them twice a week! There will be 25 countries involved, all doing pretty much the same thing. It is the first anniversary of flashmobbing, so get the word out, and bring people, bring cameras and, as always, bring a sense of fun!

Regulars will have noticed that the discussion list has fallen on its butt rather big time, and we are badly missing the feedback, so Mal is organising a new server. You will all get a notice inviting you to join. Sorry about that, but we do love to be able to chat with you guys, as a mob is only as good as the sum of it's parts. I, for one have been missing Jill rather a lot!

Thursday 27th May
Put the Sunday the 6th of June in your diaries for the next Sydmob event, but we can't let you know more yet of course, as that would just spoil it ! Details will be posted Thursday Evening 3rd June.

Also for a bit of advanced notice, you can pencil in the 19th of June for the follow events date, which will coincide with the anniversary of the 1st  even Flash Mob.....More details too follow soon but it is safe to say here comes the next global flash mob!   for more click here.....

Saturday 24th April
On Ya Sydney, once again you have managed to show the world you can have fun with your clothes on ! A modest number of mobbers made there way to Pitt St Mall, to engage the enemy in a battle for control of the sky's over Sydney. Half the Mob were "Ground Forces" with there pretend Anti-Aircraft artillery, with the second half of the mob being "Top Guns" flying their Fighter Planes and attacking the ground forces. This was to all those involved and the spectators an absolute hoot ! For the whole story click here.

 Friday 16 April 2004
Heads up Sydney - you have a week to rally the troops. Next Sunday 25th of April we will be hitting the streets again. Tell you friends, tell your family, tell the world and bring them along and now us in the act of flash mobbing. The instruction will be posted next Thursday nite so make sure you are on the maillist before then.

 Saturday, 3rd April 2004
Great weather, Great Flashmob. Around 50 mobbers heading to the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park then proceeded to walk backwards around the fountain, then act like four year olds pretending to play in the water. It was a hoot and a reasonable amount of people made it out to this one, and I can assure you EVERYONE had a huge grin on there faces ! More here

 Sunday, 21 March 2004
It was a bit of a bleak day, and there was also works going on with the train lines but a fair number of people got too mediate on a Sydney street corner today. And true to form the passers-by tried to pretend we were not there, so we turned up the heat with a loud bunch of Vegemites....Check out the Mob #13 Page

Monday, 8th March 2004 It was raining and a bit dismal but Sydmob put a shine on some Sydney's shoppers faces last Saturday.  The Queen Victoria Building was our location for this event, with the option of the Queen Vic's Statue outside if it was fine or the centre of the ground floor if it was raining....so the later ended up being used. A small but very vocal group definitely caught the attention of shoppers streaming into the QVB to get under cover form the rain. With a roaring chorus of "God save our Queens" (remember it was Mardi G parade day), followed by the Hokey Pokey, grins and bewildered looks were everywhere. Sorry we have no images for this one.....A full update will be posted soon (ish)

Monday, 15th February 2004 A very poor showing Sydney.....You had asked to go out to the suburbs....But then you don't even show up. A big thank-you to the handful of people who made the effort to make there way into Parramatta for our first and last Suburb event. It will be about 3 weeks until we do our next event....

Monday, 2 February 2004 - Well yet another successful event. A big thanks to those who made it out to Darling Harbour for the Horse race of the year ! Also a shout out to those who helped Charles out after.  It was our first event back for the year and we couldn't be happier ! Click here for more

Monday, 26 January 2004 It's been a while between drinks, but the hangover from Xmas has worn off. People, it is time to Mob again. Mark your diary in  the middle of the day on Sunday the 1st of February for flashtime. David has done a sterling job over the last six months, and we should go all out on Sunday to give him a true Sydmob send off. Pass the word around.....

Friday, 23 January 2004  SIMILAR, not NEW management has been established. Mal has agreed to take over the reigns, and has been a dedicated mobber and part of the administration team from mob#1. Mal has the philosophy, inner bullshit and seriously whacky "Right Stuff" to lead us all into further mayhem and glory. Roll on Sydmob 2004. Happy flashing people.

Mailing List information

There are now two mailing lists active on SYDMOB, SmartGroups & Announcement List

The SmartGroups list is mainly used as a discussion list which usually receives more than just event announcements. This is the list to join if you wish to discuss and chat about events/ideas/thoughts with other Sydney mobbers as well as receive the usual event information about upcoming mobs. This list can be found in the menu to the top left on your screen, as 'SmartGroups' If you do not like to receive all the single emails coming from the list, I would recommend selecting the digest mode via the Subscriber Options link found here.

The Announcement List (Bravenet) is only used to receive email updates from the SYDMOB organizers concerning such posts as upcoming mob events and other related important information. No discussion is available on this list and it is not possible for mob members to post to it. This would be the mailing list selection for you if you wanted to avoid the amount of mail that happens on the Smartgroups list. The signup procedure is outlined below (note: you can also unsubscribe from this list by entering your email address below and clicking on "Cancel Subscription"

Please note, if you are already subscribed to the SmartGroup list and wish to change to the other list, you must unsubscribe from that list first. This can be most easily accomplished by simply visiting the SmartGroup and following the directions on that page to remove yourself from the list. Failing that, you could also contact myself at info@sydmob.com
